Winter Lawn Application:

A winter lawn application, often called "dormant feeding" or "winterization," is highly beneficial for the cool-season grasses (Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass) common in the Kansas City area. Applied in late fall, right before the ground freezes, this critical treatment ensures your lawn has the energy reserves needed to withstand the unpredictable Kansas winter and thrive in the spring.

This is an optional application and is not part of the 7-Step Lawn Application Program.

Here are the primary benefits of a winter lawn application in the Kansas City area:

· Faster, Healthier Spring Green-up: The main advantage is a significantly earlier green-up in the spring - potentially weeks ahead of unfed lawns. The nutrients applied in winter are stored in the roots and crowns, ready to fuel growth as soon as temperatures allow.

· Stronger Root Development: The late-season application encourages root growth while the top growth has slowed down. This results in a deeper, more robust root system that is better able to handle the stress of summer heat and drought

· Improved Disease Resistance and Hardiness: Fertilizers with a higher potassium content help the grass build thicker cell walls, improving cold hardiness and resistance to winter-specific issues like snow mold and general winter damage.

· Denser, Weed-Resistant Turf: A thicker, healthier lawn, fueled by proper winterization, naturally helps suppress spring weeds by creating shade that prevents weed seeds from germinating.

· Less Excessive Spring Growth: Unlike an early spring application which can force excessive top growth, a late-fall application leads to more balanced growth in spring, resulting in less frequent mowing.

For the best results, we will apply this "winterizer" fertilizer (often high in nitrogen) once the grass has stopped growing but before the soil has permanently frozen, which is typically between Halloween and Thanksgiving in the Kansas City area.
