About Gardner Kansas

Gardner is a fast-growing suburb in Johnson County, about thirty miles southwest of downtown Kansas City.

History

ounded in 1857 where the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails split, it was settled mostly by folks from the East and named after Massachusetts governor Henry Gardner. From a small trail junction town, it's boomed into one of the quickest-expanding spots in the KC metro, blending historic roots with modern family-friendly growth.

Parks and Recreation

Gardner shines with active outdoor spaces and rec programs. Standouts include Celebration Park, a huge sports complex with fields, playgrounds, and trails; the Gardner Aquatic Center for summer splashes; and Gardner Junction Park marking that historic trail split. The city offers tons of youth and adult athletics, community events, pools, and connected trails.

Community

Gardner has that welcoming, tight-knit suburban feel with a young, growing vibe. Big on family events like the Independence Day Festival, Daddy-Daughter Dance, Movie in the Park nights, Earth Day celebrations, and holiday happenings. The Gardner Historical Museum keeps the trail heritage alive, and locals love the farmers market, coffee spots, and neighborhood gatherings that make it feel like home.

The City

Gardner operates under a council-manager form of government, with a mayor (currently Todd Winters) and five at-large city council members setting policy, while a professional city administrator handles day-to-day operations. The FY 2026 budget (adopted in late 2025) features expenditures about 2.4% higher than the 2025 estimate, driven by growth-related costs, equipment upgrades, and operating increases—the city maintains a low mill levy around eighteen point three to keep taxes competitive.
