Backflow testing is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to verify that your irrigation system's backflow preventer is effectively stopping contaminated water—such as fertilizers, pesticides, or bacteria—from siphoning back into your home's clean drinking water supply.

The Testing Process

· Isolation: Our certified technician temporarily shuts off the water supply to the backflow device to create a static environment for testing.

· Connection of Gauge: With the water off, specialized calibrated pressure gauges are attached to small test ports (called test cocks) on the backflow assembly.

· Differential Pressure Testing: The technician monitors the gauges while opening and closing the device's internal valves to measure pressure differences. This confirms that the internal springs and check valves seal tightly enough to prevent reverse flow.

· Functional Evaluation: TThe tester verifies that relief valves open at the correct pressure thresholds to dump potentially contaminated water rather than letting it back into the main line.

· Reporting: Once the test is passed, the technician completes and submits the required paperwork to your local water authority to document legal compliance.

· If the Backflow Test Fails: The technician will provide you with the specifics regarding what is required for the replacement or repair of your backflow device.

Why It's Mandatory in Some Cities

· Public Health:  A single backflow device failure can allow chemicals or pollutants into the public water supply affecting entire neighborhoods. TLC recommends having your backflow device tested each season to ensure it is doing it’s job and not contaminating your drinking water!

· Certification Requirement:  Because of the health risks involved, homeowners are prohibited from testing their own devices; only licensed testers with approved equipment can sign off on the results.

· Legal Compliance:  Some cities require annual testing by a certified professional; failure to provide proof can result in fines or water service disconnection.
