Landscape Bed Installation/Refresh
TLC Lawn Care, Inc.
As a full service lawn care company we can handle all your outdoor needs.

In the Kansas City area, landscape beds are critical "living ecosystems" that require strategic planning to withstand the region's seasonal extremes. Proper installation of new beds and regular refreshing of existing beds enhance curb appeal, protect plant health, and can even lower indoor temperatures by providing shade.
Benefits of Landscape Beds
Refreshing or installing landscape beds provides several ecological and financial advantages:
Property Value and Curb Appeal: Professional landscaping increases home market value and creates a lasting first impression.Environmental Impact: Plants reduce blood pressure, improve brain function, and a single tree can produce enough oxygen for four people daily while removing 26 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
Energy Efficiency: Strategically placed trees on south and west sides can lower attic temperatures by up to 40 degrees.
Ecosystem Health: Regular maintenance prevents the spread of fungal infections, pests, and weeds to the rest of the yard.
Process for New Landscape Beds
Creating a new bed in Kansas City involves intentional design and soil preparation:Site Analysis and Design: We plan for varying heights (shortest in front, tallest in back) and textures. We ensure plants are spaced according to their mature size to avoid "leggy" growth.
Soil Preparation: Healthy soil is essential. In spring, we like to break up the soil, turn it over, and incorporate 2–3 inches of compost.
Plant Selection: Choosing plants that thrive in Kansas City's climate is what we do!
- Full Sun/Heat Tolerant: Coneflower, Black-eyed Susans, Zinnias, and Lantanas.
Native/Hardy: Purple Poppy Mallow (drought-tolerant), Butterfly Milkweed, and Gray Dogwood (highly adaptable to clay or rocky soil).
Groundcover: Pink Muhly Grass, Sedum Kamtschaticum, and Mazus Reptans.
Installation: We will dig holes deep enough for roots, backfill, and water slowly to remove air pockets.
Mulching: After planting, we will apply at least a layer of mulch, keeping it away from the base of each plant to prevent rot. Refreshing Existing Landscape Beds A refresh often involves "tweaking" rather than a complete overhaul to restore a "wow factor".
Clean-up and Preparation: We will begin by removing dead plants, weeds, and winter debris to prevent disease. In the fall, consider having us till the top 6–8 inches of soil to give us a head start for spring.
Flower Rotation: We can move and replant flowers and/or shrubs to different locations each year to help prevent soil fatigue and reduce the buildup of plant-specific pests. That said, we prefer choosing new (warrantied) plants and shrubs for a fun change!
Soil Nutrient Restoration: We can add 2–3 inches of fresh compost directly on top of the soil to restore nutrients taken during the growing season, if needed.
Mulch Refresh: Let us replenish mulch annually (or twice a year) to a thickness of 2–4 inches.
Dividing Perennials: March and April are ideal for cutting back dead foliage and dividing perennials that have outgrown their space. Let us know when we can help you get some longevity from your original perennial investment.
