History


Dr. John T. Barton founded Olathe in the spring of 1857. Its name is derived from the Shawnee word “olathe,” meaning “beautiful.” The city was located on the Santa Fe Trail, a major trade route connecting Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many settlers passed through Olathe on their way west, leaving their mark on the young town.

Parks and Recreation


Olathe has an expansive parks system comprised of over 800 acres of green space across more than 30 parks and facilities.
