Key Benefits of Mulching

Moisture Conservation: Mulch is a layer of material that reduces evaporation by up to 70%, keeping plant roots hydrated during Kansas City’s hot, dry summers.

Temperature Regulation: It acts as an insulator, keeping soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This is especially critical during the Midwest's freeze-thaw cycles, which can otherwise heave shallow-rooted plants out of the ground.

Weed Suppression: A 2-to-4-inch layer blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, significantly reducing manual weeding time.

Soil Enrichment: Organic mulches add nutrients and improve soil structure as they decompose. This is particularly helpful for breaking up the heavy clay soils common in the KC metro.

Mechanical Protection: Mulch protects topsoil from being washed away during heavy rainstorms by absorbing the impact of water droplets.

Plant and Tree Protection: Creating mulch rings around trees prevents damage from lawnmowers and weed-whackers.

Types of Mulch

Organic Mulch: Composed of formerly living materials that decompose over time, such as wood chips, shredded bark, pine needles, straw, grass clippings, and fallen leaves. These enrich the soil by adding nutrients and improving its structure as they break down. At TLC, we have black mulch and brown (mocha) mulch at the ready throughout the season.

Inorganic Mulch: Made from non-living or synthetic materials like gravel, river rock, landscape fabric, plastic sheeting, and recycled rubber. These are more permanent, offering long-term weed control and moisture retention without adding nutrients to the soil.

FAQ

This is for tree protection. It prevents collar rot and/or trunk decay that can be caused when tree roots are deprived of oxygen.
The sun will eventually fade the original color of the mulch. We will "turn" the mulch on our regular visits, if you are part of our monthly maintenance program, which should provide some longevity to the original vibrant color.
Mulch is charged by the cubic yard and includes labor for installation. Schedule an appointment with our field-bidder to go over measurements. He will also let you know if any bed prep is needed, which is an additional charge.
Preparing landscape beds for fresh mulch can be an extensive task. Shrub trimming, dead-heading, debris removal, weeding, and edging may need to be done before mulch installation. This is a separate job, charged hourly, plus disposal.
The amount of mulch you'll need depends on whether or not you need to have the old mulch cleared away and completely replaced or if you just need a top-dressing. Contact us and our field-bidder will come out and assess what is best for your property.
We do not recommend weed fabric when installing organic mulch because weed fabric doesn't actually prevent weeds from growing. Between birds and the Midwestern winds, weed seeds will surely end up on top of the weed fabric, negating its purpose of blocking weed growth from the soil below. Weed fabric will also halt any soil enrichment benefits that the organic material provides as it decomposes.
Bed pre-emergent herbicide is strictly proactive control. It stops weeds at germination to prevent an outbreak before it becomes a visible problem, but it will not kill existing weeds. Bed pre-emergent applications will cut down on time spent manually weeding beds throughout the season.
