About Lenexa KS

Lenexa sits in the northern curve of Johnson County, right between the suburbs of Shawnee and Overland Park, just a ten-minute zip from I-thirty-five. Nine thousand acres, give or take, mostly flat farmland turned into parks, tech parks, and breweries.

History

Lenexa was founded in 1877 by three Swedes who wanted a town and a post office named after themselves. Land was nothing but wheat, then trains, then World War Two turned it into a wheat-less ammunition dump—now a park. The eighties gave us the first IBM plant in the Midwest. The two thousand gave us the first brewery.

Parks and Recreation

Lenexa Parks and Recreation offers extensive options, including over 30 parks with trails, playgrounds, sports courts, and fishing, access to the Lenexa Rec Center (fitness, pool, gym), various drop-in activities and classes (youth, adult, senior), cultural sites like the Legler Barn Museum, the Public Market, and seasonal pools, plus rental venues for events, covering fitness, education, arts, nature, and social engagement for all ages.

The Community

Lenexa has about fifty-eight thousand residents. Median age thirty-eight, median household income one hundred five thousand dollars. Roughly seventy-five percent white, ten percent Asian, eight percent Hispanic, five percent Black. Homeownership sits at 72%, and the city logs one of the lowest crime rates in Kansas, with violent crime under 1 per thousand. Community involvement is high: over 4,000 volunteers clocked in last year for parks, senior programs, and the Lenexa Chili Challenge.
